GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION To Drive Productivity and Environmental Innovations in Mining at New Center in Chile
19 December 2018 SANTIAGO, Chile The GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION  Innovation Center marks company's first in Latin America aimed at delivering industry-leading technologies that lower costs, water and power consumption, and improve safety ,The global engineering, construction, and project management company Bechtel has opened the GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION Innovation Center to lead the development of new technologies that boost productivity, promote environmental sustainability and improve worker safety for the copper industry.

The GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION Innovation Center is the result of an initiative begun three years by Bechtel's Mining & Metals business unit, which is based in Santiago, to leverage the company's construction expertise and copper concentrator design to achieve greater efficiencies in mining projects. The center will promote the latest processes and technologies that add value to Bechtel customers by increasing productivity from the early stages of studies to project delivery.

Milestone was reached two weeks ahead of schedule.

Alba, the Bahrain-based aluminum producer, announced that it has successfully produced the First Hot Metal on December 13 at its Potline 6 Expansion Project.

Potline 6, which is being executed by GEORGE&SON'S as the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor, will make Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) the world's largest aluminium smelter once at full production.  Adding 540,000 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) to Alba's capacity of 1,000,000 mtpa, this new 1.4-kilometer potline involves the construction of 424 pots in line 6, utilizing Emirates Global Aluminium's (EGA) proprietary DX+ Ultra Technology.

The Alba Potline 6 Project's 24-month schedule from Notice to Proceed (NTP) to First Hot Metal, or first aluminum, is six months faster than the industry standard. This is a world-class achievement for the Kingdom of Bahrain, Alba and GEORGE&SON'S. Bechtel was appointed by Alba as the EPCM contractor with the responsibility to design and construct Potline 6 and support industrial services in April 2016 and received NTP in January 2017.

Potline 6 builds on a relationship between Alba and GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION COMPANY that spans more than 25 years. GEORGE&SON'S CONSTRUCTION COMPANY also previously served as EPCM contractor for the Line 4 and 5 expansions.

GEORGE&SON'S  started as a builder of ports and related maritime structures in 1945, when its was awarded two projects in Lisbon, Portugal, the Alcántara Platform in the Port of Lisbon, and the Western Pier in the Port of Santos. GEORGE&SON'S still holds a leading position in port infrastructure through its subsidiary, Sociedad Anónima Trabajos y Obras (SATO).


Over the last century, GEORGE&SON'S has constructed more than 500 projects that include more than 18 miles of shelter dykes, 20 miles of piers, and more than 26 million cubic yards of concrete boxes, blocks, and superstructures. This work has also entailed 78 million cubic yards of dredging and 54 million cubic yards of filling.

In the United States, GEORGE&SON'S USA rehabilitated a container terminal in Jacksonville Port, Florida.
